Graphic overlays are used in a wide variety of products and you likely encounter them throughout the day. Some remote controllers use them, most microwaves do as well, and you will likely find them on other equipment as well if you looked for it. They basically tell the operator what a blinking light means or which button to push to make something specific happen, like having a microwave cook something for a minute.
Graphic overlays can be cut to fit any product and thus do not require a product to be made a certain way to accommodate the overlay. These overlays can be created to be scratch and shatter resistant as well as made to resist moisture and chemicals. For these reasons, manufacturers use graphic overlays to protect their sensitive equipment in areas where it will be used regularly and where the environment would be less then pleasant to the equipment such as a machine shop.
